Commemorating Black History Month
The theme of Black History Month for 2020 is “African Americans and the Vote”. There have been multiple commemorations throughout the City in February, some in City facilities including area libraries, but also in surrounding museums, neighborhood centers, churches, schools and other facilities. I am pleased that the Common Council recognized the month at their meeting this week. It was very special to have Madison's own Betty Banks speak to us at the meeting. Betty has been an inspiration and a role model to so many of us for years. She is the former director of the Madison Community Health Center, a co-founder of The Madison Times newspaper and director of the non-profit, Today Not Tomorrow. We are so grateful for her guidance, experience and leadership.
In passing the resolution, the City encourages the celebration of the month of February and invites all residents to learn more about African American history to better understand the experiences of African Americans and how they have sharped our nation. I certainly think that effort should go on year-long, not just in February. You can read the entire resolution below.
