New Metro Transit Facility
FedEx Buildings Purchased for Satellite Bus Maintenance/Storage Garage
The City of Madison is finalizing the purchase of two FedEx buildings at 3901 and 3829 Hanson Rd., which are located on the far east side of Madison near the UW Hospital American Center.
These two buildings are larger, more modern and overall a much more cost effective option than the previously-considered use of the former Oscar Mayer meatpacking plant facility.
Both buildings feature large open spaces, which make them more suited to storing and maintaining Metro's vehicle fleet. This will require much less prep work to be done prior to move in.
Most importantly, this facility finally provides the room and infrastructure necessary to add more vehicles to Metro's fleet and ultimately expand service.
The City of Madison plans to close on the property on July 1, 2021. Once that is complete, staff will immediately begin to move buses to this new location to alleviate overcrowding in Metro's current facility on E. Washington Ave.
Installation of a bus wash, maintenance bays, service lanes, and other maintenance equipment will then start getting underway later this year.
