Transit Network Plan

Metro driver greets passengersThe Transit Network Design Plan will review the current Metro Transit route structure and present alternative route network concepts.

When Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is implemented in 2024, the local route system will need to be adapted to coordinate with the new BRT service, serving connections as well as reducing duplication.

Doing this also presents an opportunity to look at the system as a whole and make comprehensive improvements to provide access for people to jobs, education, shopping, and other attractions.

The City of Madison has hired Jarrett Walker and Associates to assist in developing alternatives and helping us with the tools and information needed to make decisions around route network changes.

Three to four alternative networks will be developed and the network that best meets objectives and policy goals will be implemented. The project process will take place throughout 2021. Transit network changes will be put into effect between 2022 and the opening of BRT service in 2024.

The project will include a robust engagement process that will provide a variety of opportunities for the community to provide input and evaluate alternatives.

The engagement process will be implemented by Urban Assets with a strong focus on engaging current Metro Transit riders who rely on primarily on transit to get to jobs, schools, and shopping locations.
