August Moving Days: Appliances, Furniture, & Other Large Items
The annual August Moving Days ritual in downtown Madison will begin soon. On top of packing, hauling, and saying goodbyes, movers need to decide just what to do with all their unwanted stuff.
The past couple of days, the Streets Division sent out information about how movers can use the carts and donate their unwanted items. Today will cover how to handle appliances (like microwaves), furniture, and other large items.

About Appliance Collection
In order for Streets Division crews to collect certain appliances like microwaves and refrigerators, residents need to purchase a recycling fee sticker and place it on the item prior to collection.
About Furniture & Other Large Items
The Streets Division uses a truck-mounted crane to collect most large items. It is important to keep your furniture and other bulky material away from obstructions such as low hanging wires and street signs in order for the crane to work safely and efficiently.
Other Guidelines for Furniture, Appliances, and Other Large Items
- Do not pile bagged trash or recyclables on top of large items appliances set out for collection.
- Keep larger metal items, such as filing cabinets or bed frames, separate from other material so they can be easily collected and recycled.
Streets Division Operations
Residents in the downtown moving area with appliances, furniture, and other large items meant for collection are encouraged to begin placing them out for pickup starting on August 5. Streets Division crews will begin collecting material on that day, and will continue collection each day until August 15.
The Drop-off Sites
The Streets Division offers drop-off site services for all residents of the City of Madison.
Appliances, furniture, and other large items can be taken to a drop-off site as well.
Residents can bring one load a day of large items to either the 1501 W. Badger Rd. or the 4602 Sycamore Ave drop-off site. The single load cannot be larger than what would fit into a standard pick-up truck bed or small single-axle trailer. Loads larger than those guidelines will be denied access to the site.
Individuals wanting to use the drop-off site will need to provide proof of their City of Madison residency.
The sites are open 8:30am to 4:30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The sites are open 8:30am to 8:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Items that require a recycling fee sticker still require one prior to dropping off the item at the sites.
Recycling Fee Sticker Sales
Recycling fee stickers can be purchased at the Streets Division offices at 1501 W. Badger Rd. and 4602 Sycamore Ave. between the hours of 7:30am and 4:00pm Monday to Friday.
Stickers can also be purchased at any City of Madison public library and the Treasurer’s office in the City-County Building, Room 107.
Stickers can also be purchased online at www.madisonpay.com. Stickers purchased online will be sent in the mail following the purchase. If a recycling fee sticker is needed quickly, it is recommended to use one of the in-person purchase options listed above.
