MPD Slated to Graduate 14 Recruits on Friday, June 26th, 2015

The Madison Police Department is proud to announce and celebrate the graduation exercises for the 57th Pre-Service Academy.
Consistent with previous classes, this year’s group of Officers is highly diverse in terms of life, work and educational experience.   A snapshot profile reflects an average age of 28, with all of them holding a Bachelor’s degree and nearly half of them holding a Master’s degree.  Many of these men and women possess a variety of previous work experiences to include:  restorative justice counselor, exercise and fitness trainer, attorney, police officer, educator, and a youth services counselor.  Before beginning their training, the “candidates” competed against a pool of nearly 900 applicants!
These officers began a nine-month training regimen when they first took the oath of office on September 15th, 2014.  Nearly six months of training was provided in a host of areas including unified tactics (which is comprised of professional communication, defense and arrest tactics, firearms, emergency vehicle operation and vehicle contacts).  Additionally, MPD prides itself on augmenting State curriculum with extended blocks on relational skills, Constitutional law, investigations, response to individuals in crisis, trust-based community policing, ethics and problem solving.
Upon completion of the Academy, the Recruits were paired with veteran Field Training Officers for three months who coached, mentored and trained them to help take the lessons learned from the Academy and translate them to the realities encountered within our community.  These new officers began working in a “solo” capacity earlier this month, assigned to Patrol Services working in one of the Department’s five district stations on the afternoon and overnight shifts.
The graduation ceremony will take place at the Madison Police Department Training Center beginning at 6:00P.  The class has chosen Academy Sergeant Timothy Patton to deliver their commencement address.  Sergeant Patton was a Training Officer for nearly six years prior to his promotion to Sergeant.  He rejoined the Training Staff in August 2014 and has been a member of the Madison Police Department for over 13 years.
