The Madison Police Department has arrested Justin M. Simpson, age 20, on a drug charge. Simpson is also a suspect in several recent armed robberies.

On Sunday, March 22, 2009, around 1:30 p.m., Madison Police Sergeant Chris Paulson was driving near the intersection of Park Street and Wingra Street, when he spotted Simpson walking. Paulson made contact with Simpson. Simpson was wearing a black, puffy parka. Following a search of his clothing, a facsimile handgun, and some heroin were recovered.

Simpson was arrested for drug possession, and has since confessed involvement to three recent armed robberies: two that occurred at the Shell gas station, 4821 East Washington Avenue, and one that happened this past weekend at the Pinkus McBride Market, 301 N. Hamilton Street.

Since Mr. Simpson was contacted yesterday, a team of detectives has been working to determine the extent of his involvement in recent crimes. They continue to talk with him at this time.

The Madison Police Department had set-up a massive dragnet in the past week with hopes of locating the person/persons committing the series of pattern-armed robberies. Sgt. Paulson was on the streets yesterday as part of that pro-active effort.

It is unknown how many could be involved in the crimes, and the investigation continues.
