UW-Madison Graphic Design Students Receive BLINK Funding and to produce and display get out the vote poster designs at MMoCA.
In anticipation of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, UW-Madison typography professor Henrique Nardi challenged his class to design a series of nonpartisan posters to raise awareness of political issues and encourage voter empowerment and participation. Exercising their aesthetic and creative talents, Nardi’s graphic design students embraced the assignment and delivered a poster campaign with broad public appeal that also speaks directly to UW students.
Owing to a partnership between the UW-Madison Art Department, the Madison Arts Commission (MAC), and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), a selection of these posters is currently featured across MMoCA’s State Street façade, prominently displayed for public viewing.
Instructor Henrique Nardi explained "I'm always trying to find opportunities for students to have their work out the world so that they can see the community's reaction to their work. The election period is such a crucial moment for that interaction to happen." Adding, "Partnering with the MMoCA and MAC is really exciting for all the students involved."
Selected by instructor Henrique Nardi and MMoCA curator Leah Kolb, the featured posters are by Annie Claypool, Austen Wallenfang, Brittanie Sousa, Katie Herrick, Annika Ide, and Spencer Fitzgerald. The project was generously funded through MAC's BLINK, a temporary public art program that supports experimental, ad- hoc, temporary works of art to sprout up throughout the community and vanish, leaving residents and visitors eager to see what is next.
