Discarded Ashes Ignite Trash Can Fire
Incident Details
A small fire on Hillcrest Drive was caught early thanks to a passing motorist who noticed it and called 911.
Engine Company 9 responded to the scene and began to put out the fire, which was contained to a City-issued trash bin.
The fire officer made contact with the homeowner who stated he put his ashes from the fire place in the bin. He thought the ashes were cool enough to toss out, but that proved not to be the case.
Ashes can re-ignite up to 72 hours after a fire and should not be placed in a combustible container until (at least) that amount of time has passed.
Damage was contained to the garbage bin.
