Reminder: Year-Round Clean Streets/Clean Lakes Starts Nov. 15

Starting on Nov. 15, the 4-hour or 3-hour no parking window that occurs once per week on almost all District 2 streets will become a year-round program. Some of you already had year-round Clean Streets/Clean Lakes restrictions, but all should check street signs to verify the day of the week and hours that parking is not allowed.

CSCL street signs should be of two types:

  1. A previously existing sign that now has the May 15 to Nov 15 parking restriction covered up with paint or a sticker, thereby making the restriction year-round, or
  2. A new or previously existing sign that had no months or dates at all, therefore indicating that the restriction was and is year-round.

If a street has no signs restricting parking due to the Clean Streets/Clean Lakes program, e.g., in Sherman Terrace, the CSCL program is not in effect and there is no parking restriction related to CSCL at this time. There could be other restrictions in some places, so read carefully.

Snow Emergency Zone Now Larger

The Snow Emergency Zone now covers all of District 2 with one exception - the one main street in Sherman Terrace. The SEZ has expanded in other areas of the city center too.

During a declared snow emergency, vehicles in the Snow Emergency Zone must follow a set of particular rules when parked on city streets, including Alternate Side Parking Rules for those nights. The rules must be followed for a minimum of 2 nights and the emergency can be extended if needed, and potentially shortened.

Also, during a declared Snow Emergency both Alternate Side Parking Rules and CSCL restrictions apply. So, if a Snow Emergency happens to fall on the day when your CSCL parking restriction is in effect, both restrictions must be followed.

Note that streets with parking allowed only on one side are a special situation. During a Declared Snow Emergency, those streets still need to follow the CSCL restrictions, although they are exempt from the Alternate Side Parking Rules during a Declared Snow Emergency, as they have been in the past.

Violations of the alternate side parking ordinance during a Declared Snow Emergency are punishable by fines of $60.

Visit the City of Madison Winter website for more information, to sign up for Snow alert emails/texts, sidewalk clearing alerts, and other snow and winter information.

You can learn more on these topics in an earlier update that I posted in September.
