Written Test & Essay

Written Test

The written test measures your vocabulary and reading skills. Your score is used to evaluate your communication abilities.

We use the Nelson / Denny written test. There is a free study guide with practice questions available online if you would like to prepare for the test.

Essay

The written test also includes an essay question. You will be asked to respond to the following prompt:

"Looking at your life, work and educational experiences, describe what unique qualifications and/or skills you would bring to the Madison Police Department."

You should prepare for this essay before the test. Please understand that no notes or outlines will be allowed.

Alternative Test Locations

We host written testing sessions at select locations regionally to make it easier for you to apply. You do not need to fill out your application packet before taking the test.

Test locations for the 2021 - 2022 hiring process are as follows:

  • No alternative testing sessions scheduled at this time.
