Address2600 block Old Camden Square
ArrestedRaphael F. Henderson, age 19, Madison
Suspect was arrested for Possession of Stolen Property
Victim(s)Male, age 31, Madison
DetailsThe MPD teamed up with a crime victim to set up a sting Thursday that led to the arrest of a Madison teen.
Monday morning, the 31-year old discovered his iPad had been stolen from his car which was parked in the lot of his Old Camden Square residence.
It was housed in a rather distinctive case and the victim saw it was now posted for sale on Craigslist. He contacted the MPD.
A MPD sergeant - posing as a prospective buyer - began texting back and forth with the person who had the Craigslist posting. They agreed to meet at a McDonald's on Fish Hatchery Rd. yesterday afternoon.
An undercover officer sat down with the seller and examined the iPad. It had the serial number of the one stolen from the victim.
The seller said something about needing money to go back to college, and that he had gotten the iPad from a buddy a couple of months ago. He was willing to part with it for $330.
Of course, he ended up getting no money at all. Uniformed officers moved in, and the arrest was made.
The MPD encourages everyone to record serial numbers of valuable electronics. If they are stolen and recovered, it makes it much easier to get them back to their owners, or in this case to determine the item was stolen. It is also best not to keep electronics in parked vehicles as they can become targets of opportunistic criminals.
