Incident Date09/19/2013 - 9:42 AM
Address2400 block Columbus Ln.
Victim(s)Male, age 30, Madison
DetailsIn the end, the 30-year old Madison man knew the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services would not be ordering him to Walmart to take out Green Dot cards to the tune of $3,960. That's how much he was told he must pay in order to stay in the United States. The native of India learned, during a phone conversation with USCIS official "Steve Marsh," there was a problem with his immigration form. That struck him strange since he had heard nothing before this. He filled the form out in 2007. But "Steve" was quite clear, the Madison man was going to be jailed and deported if he did not pay the penalty. The would-be victim said "Steve" was trying to sound American but was not doing a very good job, as the voice on the phone seemed to be Indian to him. While he quickly dismissed this as a fraud attempt, he fears others might be duped. USCIS offers many tips on its website on how people can protect themselves from similar scams.
