Incident Date02/23/2014 - 3:20 AM
Address700 S. Park St. (St. Mary's Hospital)
ArrestedBo J. Penman, age 22, Madison
Mr. Penman was arrested for Disorderly Conduct - 2 counts, and Criminal Trespass to Medical Facility - 2 counts.
DetailsA Madison man was arrested after he allegedly made threats to kill security staff at St. Mary's Hospital early Sunday morning. The suspect was taken into custody just outside of the medical facility around 3:20 a.m. after officers – who had set up extra patrol around the hospital – found him inside a car that had been circling St. Mary's. He had shotgun shells in his pockets, and a shotgun was found in the car's trunk.
The suspect initially came to the hospital with a family member who was being provided medical attention. That was shortly before 1:00 a.m. Security staff escorted him outside after he began to create a disturbance by yelling and swearing. Witnesses said the suspect threatened to "beat up" security personnel and that is why police were originally called. Officers found the subject, "up against the glass," in the ambulance bay. The man was ticketed (municipal citations) for disorderly conduct and trespass, and an officer gave him a ride home.
Around 2:20 a.m., the suspect returned to the hospital and began threatening security again, this time saying he was going get a shotgun. The MPD was alerted and a responding officer began providing extra patrol.
An hour later police, with help from a hospital staff member, were able to identify a suspicious vehicle, which at one point had been traveling with headlights off. It was stopped on Erin St., just outside of the hospital, and the arrest was made. This time the suspect was taken to jail on tentative state charges.
