Incident Date

01/04/2018 - 8:30 PM

600 block N. Frances St.

Mauricio B. Mendez-Lera, age 29, no permanent address
Suspect was arrested for attempt to commit burglary, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.

Female, age 19, Madison

There was an instant adrenaline rush, and then her heart dropped, as she realized a stranger was just outside her bedroom window and trying to gain access to her N. Frances St. apartment last night. " Someone is literally two feet away from me. I don't know if he had a weapon and what he was intending to do once he got inside," the 19-year-old later told police. When she heard the screen being cut, followed by jiggling of the window, she ran from her bedroom, collected her thoughts, and got out of the apartment to call 911. MPD was seconds away, and when the first officers rolled up, the criminal was still outside the victim's window, trying to open it. He was quickly taken into custody on tentative charges listed above. He had several cell phones in his backpack. The MPD is in the process of determining if any had been stolen.
