Incident Report for Case #2018-075258

Incident Type

Incident Date

03/14/2018 - 11:30 AM

East Washington Ave.

Members of the MPD's Special Event Team helped an estimated group of 3000 march safely and peacefully from East High School to the State Capitol late this morning as area students left classes to participate in the National School Walkout against gun violence. There were some traffic delays as demonstrators passed along the route.  The march and rally were held to honor young people recently slain in a Florida high school mass shooting. Participants are calling on lawmakers to take a number of steps hoping to prevent future tragedies. During the course of the event a MPD lieutenant found a backpack on a sidewalk. It was later determined to contain a BB gun which looked like a real handgun. The backpack was turned over to Capitol Police.
