This is a release from the Dane County Medical Examiner:
The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office is releasing the name of the homicide victim from the incident in the 600 block of Meadowlark Drive in the City of Madison. The incident occurred on 04-01-18 and was reported to authorities at or about 6:15AM. The victim is identified as:
Andrew T. THORLAND
Andrew Thorland was transported to a local hospital but died shortly after arrival. A forensic autopsy was completed on 04-02-18 at the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office. Preliminary autopsy results confirm that Andrew Thorland's death is the result of homicidal firearm related trauma. Additional testing is underway at this time.
The suspect in Andrew Thorland's homicide has also died. The suspect can be identified as:
Timothy A. THORLAND
Timothy Thorland was transported to a local hospital following an apparent self-inflicted firearm injury but died shortly after arrival. A forensic autopsy was completed today on Timothy Thorland. Preliminary results of that autopsy confirm that Timothy Thorland also died from firearm related injuries. Additional testing is underway at this time.
Both of these deaths remain under investigation by the City of Madison Police and the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.
At 6:08am, MPD Patrol units responded to 614 Meadowlark Drive for a report of people down with gunshot wounds.
Upon arrival, officers contacted a 61-year-old woman who directed us to a bedroom of this residential, single-family dwelling.
The room was tactically cleared and officers located two individuals (a 58-year-old WM and a 33–year-old WM) who were both found with gunshot wounds). MFD also responded to render aid and subsequently conveyed both individuals to a local hospital). Regrettably, both were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Given the fact that our investigation has reflected that the men were known to one another in a domestic context (i..e, father/son) and in light of the fact that officers were at the undisturbed scene within minutes, there is ample reason to believe that this was an isolated event and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The weapon used in this incident was recovered at the scene, as were the number of casings consistent with the wounds found on the bodies.
Members of MPD's Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) as well as District Detectives and Forensic Investigators all responded to assist.
Release of the names of the deceased will be made by the Medical Examiner's Office.
This matter has the telltale signs of a murder-suicide, but we will have to draw upon the subject matter expertise of the Medical Examiner's Office before any definitive conclusions can be drawn.
