Incident Report for Case #2019-157569

Incident Type

Weapons Violation

Incident Date

04/28/2019 - 2:00 AM

4822 E. Washington Ave. (Comfort Inn and Suites)

Officers ended up recovering more than 30 casings and learned at least two cars were also struck by gunfire, including one belonging to an Uber driver who was transporting a fare through the area when shots rang out. They were not injured. The MPD put local hospitals on alert in case anyone with a bullet wound arrived, but - at this time - it does not appear there were any victims, but it was a close call. There were around 30 diners inside the restaurant at the time of the gun violence. Several patrons were hit with shards of glass as windows shattered. All got to the floor and crawled to the kitchen. Casings were found in the restaurant's parking lot, and in the lot of a nearby hotel. Around a dozen officers responded to the scene. The case is being investigated by the MPD's Violent Crimes Unit.

At approximately 2:00 AM MPD was dispatched to multiple reports of shots being fired in and around the area of the Perkins Restaurant in the 4800 block of Hayes Rd. and E. Washington Ave. on Madison's north side.  When officers arrived they saw multiple vehicles fleeing the area and found evidence that multiple shots had been fired.  Two windows in the occupied restaurant were damaged during the shooting.  It looks as if additional rounds could have been fired from the area of the Comfort Inn and Suites across the street.  At this time no injuries have been reported.  The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
