Incident Type

Incident Date

09/10/2019 - 4:40 PM

500 block University Ave.

Kyle W. Haag, age 34, no permanent address
Haag was arrested for robbery and disorderly conduct.

Female, age 22, Madison

A strong-armed robber was taken to the ground by a Good Samaritan Tuesday afternoon, and other witnesses also jumped in to help as all attempted to hold a robbery suspect down until police arrived. Ultimately, the suspect was able to get up and run, but he did not get far, thanks to actions of the citizen posse. They delayed the suspect's attempted getaway, and in doing so, put officers in position to make an arrest moments after they took action.
The foot pursuit began after the suspect unzipped a 22-year-old victim's backpack as she was walking in the 500 block of University Avenue around 4:40 p.m. The pocket he entered contained her wallet. Feeling a tug on her pack, she turned around, saw the robber had her wallet, and yelled for help.
A 21-year-old Kentucky man witnessed what was happening. He kicked into action, chasing after the suspect. The suspect threatened to kill the Kentucky man, and took a swing at the witness. The Good Samaritan defended himself, throwing a punch at the suspect and then taking him to the ground.
Others came into assist, and during the struggle the suspect ended up with a head cut which would require stitches before he could be taken to jail. He was booked on tentative charges of robbery and disorderly conduct. Several used hypodermic needles were found in his backpack.
The victim, who got her wallet back quickly, was initially very distraught. Her demeanor improved as she was comforted by many who were in the area, as well as the responding MPD officers.
