Incident Date10/19/2019 - 7:15 AM
Address1900 block Reetz Rd.
Victim(s)Female, age 23
DetailsInitially she had been crying hysterically, and could not give a statement. When she was able to talk, she told police, "I know it was dumb to jump on the hood."
She went on to explain how her car is the shop and how she had taken out a loaner from Smart Motors: a 2019 red Toyota Camry. Early Saturday morning, the victim left a home in the 1900 block of Reetz Rd., and spotted a stranger behind the wheel. She quickly realized she had inadvertently left the key fob inside, and yelled at the man to get out. Instead, he started the car and began to drive. That's when the young woman jumped on the hood and tried to hang on. The thief said nothing, but "just started driving like a maniac," according to the woman. At the intersection of Gilbert Rd. and Raymond Rd. he slammed on the brakes causing her to fall to the pavement. "I was super scared. I thought I was going to die ... but then this random lady stopped and helped me, asking if I was okay." The random lady was in a car with others who had spotted the stolen Toyota coming directly at them, with the victim clinging to its hood. The Camry nearly hit the witnesses' car, and they went to the young woman's aid after she tumbled onto the roadway. Fortunately she suffered only a few cuts and bruises and was not seriously injured.
