Attendees will be provided with specialized behavioral health training for various types of mental health conditions public safety personnel may be faced with during a crisis negotiation involving a mentally ill subject and/or a barricaded criminal in crisis or a hostage taker holding a hostage.

Strategies can be quite challenging and have potential to pose danger to the public and safety personnel if not dealt with appropriately. Challenges include individual(s) suffering from suicidality & attempts to manage individuals who suffer from a major focus of clinical and behavioral attention.

Topics include: intro to major psychiatric disorders, overview of personality disorders, types of negotiating incidents, priorities within negotiations, active listening strategies & communication techniques, plus other supplemental aids in dealing with this specialized population.

Taught by Dr. Robert Cipriano Jr.  Dr. Cipriano is currently a Florida Licensed Psychologist for the past 12 years. He is board certified in Police and Public Safety Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and for the past decade had also worked as a Police Psychologist for Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD). In that role he served as a consultant for the Special Response Team (SRT -Also known as SWAT) and provided expert training and developed strategies for effectively working with and understanding the "criminal mind."  He assisted the team in gaining insight and managing individuals who suffered from severe mental illness and who were in crisis. Additionally, he provided critical support to the crisis negotiation team when they were faced with crisis situations, hostages, career criminals, and barricaded subjects who posed a threat for police and the community at large.
