Volunteer Spotlight: Sydney
posted
Introducing Sydney, our second AASPIRE intern! Sydney splits her time between the senior center and City’s IT department. While at the senior center she is updating the content of our website, when it is re-launched in the fall you will see a website that is easy to read and up to date. On her days in IT, she is working on the Community Development Division website.
As part of the AASPIRE program she’s earning money for college and gaining additional experience by attending city government meetings and a professional training series. We learned a little bit more about her in a mini interview:
Favorite celebrity over 55 and why?
Kathy Bates! She always plays strong minded characters and she is hilarious. I love the scene in Fried Green Tomatoes when she rams into a car full of young people that stole her parking spot at the grocery store (don’t worry nobody gets hurt).
What do you enjoy most about Madison in the summer?
Just sitting on my front porch and people watching.
Favorite Madison Hang Out?
Probably the Memorial Union Terrace, I am a Badger after all.
Favorite city outside of Wisconsin?
It’s so hard to pick, but I’d have to say Vancouver, Canada. I have a friend who goes to school there and when I visited her a couple years ago I was amazed that one city could be simultaneously surrounded by forest, ocean and mountains on all sides. It is beautiful.
If you could time travel where/when would you go?
Sparta, in ancient Greece.
What’s your favorite classic TV show?
Perry Mason. I watched the entire series with my dad growing up, and now I am obsessed with legal dramas and crime shows.
What fictional character do you wish you could meet?
Dumbledore from Harry Potter, I think he would give me good advice.
