Madison Police Department - Safety Education Program

The Madison Police Department Safety Education Unit  is operated by Officers Mary Pat Chvala, Susan Carnell, Shannon Mattson and Anh Sweeney.  The primary purpose of the Safety Education Officers is to provide comprehensive program support to the Madison Metropolitan School District, including Madison's private schools.  Program support includes traditional crime prevention topics, Protective Behaviors, Alternatives to Aggression, and Traffic Safety.

The unit also responds to requests from the community for preschool programming and programs for the elderly.  Unit members serve on various boards and review committees and do curriculum development work.  The nature of this job is ever changing based on individual, neighborhood, and school needs.

  • Shoplifting Prevention (STOP)
  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • 911 - What is an Emergency
  • Alternatives to Aggression
  • Sexual Assault/Harassment Laws
  • Self Care Skills/Home Alone
  • AODA prevention

Safety Education Officers also respond to requests for crime prevention and safety information for private organizations, assist with the MMSD Safety Patrol program, assist neighborhoods in organizing neighborhood projects, Career Awareness, Curriculum Development, and Traffic Programs.
