Welcome to Building
Inspection. We are a code enforcement,
project review, and approval agency for a variety of
municipal and State ordinances and codes. We also are
the agent of the State of Wisconsin for inspection and
plan review services for all construction within
Madison and Dane County. We regulate land use
through the enforcement of zoning approvals and
protect consumers through its weights and measures
program, Housing Inspection services, and the
monitoring of street vending.

- Rental Property Emergency Contact: On April 19, 2011, the Madison Common Council voted to amend Madison General Ordinance 27.04(2)(k). This Ordinance requires every owner of a rental dwelling to keep on record with the Building Inspection Division contact information of two (2) or more persons located in Dane County who, by virtue of his or her ownership, employment, or delegation, can exercise control and care over the property, and provide access to the property.

In the New
Construction division, we inspect all new buildings, for compliance
with numerous building codes in each of the three construction phases:
site approval, plan approval, construction. We also review all building
plans for new work.

It is our responsibility to issue written notices of housing code violations to building owners of existing structures. The notices establish a deadline for repairs or corrections.
