The SMPC is a coalition of southside neighborhood organizations working together to make our community a better place to live, work and play for everyone. SMPC, created by Madison Common Council resolution in August 1996, is the second planning council in Madison. SMPC carries out its mission by neighborhood organizing and economic development initiatives. It is governed by a board of representatives chosen by its member neighborhood and business associations.

Mission Statement

The South Metropolitan Planning Council (SMPC) is an assembly of residents who, as citizen volunteers representing South Madison neighborhood, apartment, condominium and business associations, are dedicated to improving the quality of life on the south side of Madison. The SMPC's primary goals are:

  • To link neighborhood associations and community groups together into a network which establish consensus about land usage, South Madison revitalization and reimaging, economic development and human services needs of the community; put in a different context.
  • To improve local initiative and control over resources which affect South Madison residents; and
  • To encourage citizen involvement in community affairs and projects from diverse groups and neighborhoods.
