On September 3rd, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, Alderman Mike Verveer, and Alderman Austin King hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the top of State Street. This event congratulated all downtown businesses, Joe Daniels Construction, City Staff, Downtown Madison Inc., and The Greater State Street Business Association on a job well done! New landscaping, stages, streetlights, benches, paving, the Philosophers' Grove, and the new bus shelters are a welcome sight after months of construction. Please come and visit State Street to see all of the exciting changes. The State Street Design Project Plan proposes a comprehensive design approach for the State Street District. State Street-- Madison’s most identifiable street-- is located at the center of this District and is scheduled to be reconstructed beginning in 2004. The reconstruction plans address all aspects of the public right-of-way, including elements such as paving, street lighting, street furniture, bus shelters, wayfinding signage and opportunities for public art. The Madison Common Council unanimously adopted the conceptual design plan in April 2002 after a 1-½ year community-wide planning process. To learn more about the process and evolution of the design, please visit the Design Process Archive section of this website. Since adoption of the Plan, numerous activities related to its implementation have commenced. This website will be periodically updated to most effectively convey information on these activities and provide opportunities for on-going public input.
