Area Plan Information

What is an Area Plan?

An Area Plan is a long-term vision designed to guide changes in the physical aspects of our community, including private sector development and public sector infrastructure improvements.

How do I find my Area Plan?

How are Plans used?

Madison experiences significant population and job growth. Plans are used to guide the types and locations of new development, identify locations for investment in public infrastructure, ranging from parks to sewers and bike paths. Plans help prioritize what policies, programs, and investments the community wants to pursue with limited resources.

How much is Madison going to grow?

The City has been experiencing significant population growth and it is projected to continue.

2025 Housing Snapshot

Area Plan Data

Use the data dashboard below to view Area Plan data on demographics, housing, transportation, employment, and more.

The data dashboard uses Neighborhood Indicators Project (NIP) data which is updated every two years. NIP is a partnership with the UW-Madison Applied Population Lab. It provides geographically detailed data for over 50 variables within seven topic areas, utilizing a wide variety of data sources.
