Crack Sealing
Crack Sealing
Crack Sealing is used as the first preventive measure. Crack sealing pavements is done at 5 and 10 years of age. The cracks in the street are cleaned of debris and are filled with a sealant. By sealing cracks, it prevents surface water from penetrating into the pavement foundation, and the spread of cracks in the pavement.

Chip Sealing
Chip Sealing
The Streets Division conducts an annual chip seal program on unimproved streets. Unimproved streets are streets without curb and gutter.

Chip sealing involves applying a layer of oil to the street and covering it with surfacing material, generally a layer of small stones. After the oil has cured (approximately five to ten days) excess material will be swept by a mechanical street sweeper.

There is no charge to property owners for chip sealing. Chip sealing is done by the Dane County Highway Department under contract with the City.
