CLASS DESCRIPTION
General Responsibilities:
This is entry-level paraprofessional accounting work in the development and reconciliation of accounting records/reports, and/or the administration of accounting-related programs. Under the general supervision of a professional Accountant, employees exercise increasing level of judgment and discretion in the completion of paraprofessional activities once the required skills are developed. The Accounting Technician series is structured to provide for career advancement to Account Technician 2.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare routine financial reports having a prescribed format and submit them for review.
Prepare and maintain account balances of grants, enterprise funds or similar fiscal appropriations, subject to review and approval.
Perform paraprofessional bookkeeping functions relative to receipts, disbursements, and data collection. Perform necessary follow-up, e.g., collections.
Prepare initial reconciliations between subsidiary and general ledger accounts, submit for review and make subsequent corrections.
Assist in the maintenance of financial records for federal projects or enterprise funds.
Calculate and process disbursements such as utility payments, training and travel advances and housing assistance payments subject to review, approval and/or correction.
Assist in the development and/or maintenance of complex computerized accounting systems.
Perform and/or participate in accounting studies. Provide related background data and findings, under review.
Participate in routine internal and external audits under the supervision of a professional. Gather and review specified data. Submit routine reports for review and make necessary corrections.
Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles, practices, procedures and terminology. Working knowledge of general office practices. Working knowledge of related recordkeeping principles and systems (both manual and automated systems). Ability to implement related paraprofessional accounting activities, e.g., to prepare and reconcile accounting records/reports; to calculate and process accounts receivable/payable; and to implement related accounting programs and systems. Ability to operate a calculator and make necessary calculations. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain effective working relationships. Ability to maintain adequate attendance.
Training and Experience:
Three years of advanced level accounting clerical or bookkeeping experience supplemented by related coursework; or graduation from an accredited two year business college or technical school with an Associate Degree in accounting and one year of directly related experience. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledges, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.
