AQUATICS SUPERVISOR
CLASS DESCRIPTION
General Responsibilities:
This is responsible and specialized supervisory work in overseeing daily lifeguard and attendant operations at City beaches and at the municipal pool. Under the general supervision of the Recreation Services Supervisor or Pool Manager within the Parks Division, work necessitates judgment and initiative in preparing for and responding to emergency situations and in addressing daily operational demands at diverse locations.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist the Recreational Services Supervisor and/or Pool Manager in providing first aid and beach management classes, and related in-service and lifeguard training sessions. Assist in hiring new and replacement staff and in providing job orientation.
Schedule and monitor lifeguard, swim instructors and attendant activities. Assign daily clean-up work.
Conduct periodic inspections of beach areas and the municipal pool to monitor the performance of lifeguards and attendants in order to provide feedback and responsive training, as required. Report concerns or problems to the Recreation Services Supervisor or Pool Manager, as appropriate, for action.
Check the condition of all lifesaving equipment. Check the condition and position of area lines. Coordinate emergency situation response activities. Operate small boats, as required.
Inspect grounds and concession stands and ensure that related standards are maintained.
Respond to questions and concerns from the public. Provide policy clarifications, and advise parks management as appropriate.
Perform all duties of a Lifeguard 3, as required.
Assist in checking time records for accuracy and completeness and oversee the operation of general concession stands and swim lessons programs. Provide supplies and check the conditions of stands.
Perform related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the principles and methods of water rescue work, beach/pool management, first aid methods, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Ability to supervise the work of others. Ability to respond to public concerns/complaints effectively. Ability to monitor lifeguard and attendant performance and to provide leadership in achieving standards. Ability to plan and coordinate all related training in support of the Recreation Services Supervisor. Ability to participate in hiring and managing staff. Demonstrable skill in swimming. Ability to accomplish water rescues and operate life saving equipment. Ability to follow written and oral directions. Ability to keep records and make reports. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to handle/coordinate more difficult emergency situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patrons and to enforce related rules and regulations with firmness and tact. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to travel to various beaches and other activity sites. Skill in the operation of small boats. Ability to maintain adequate attendance.
Training and Experience:
At least two seasons of related experience as a lifeguard or equivalent including at least one season of lead or supervisory responsibility and current certification in the following areas: 1) Lifeguard Training or equivalent, 2) American Red Cross First Aid Course, 3) American Red Cross or American Health Association Community CPR and 4) Lifeguard Training Instructor or CPR Instructor. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledges, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.
