ARCHITECTURAL AIDE I
CLASS DESCRIPTION
General Responsibilities:
This is basic technical support work performed in a professional architectural and public works construction environment. The work involves preparing architectural plans, drawings, and construction specifications for new construction, additions, remodeling, and repair work to City-owned buildings; performing construction inspection work on various projects, and performing other related technical support activities. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a professional architect and is reviewed in progress and upon completion.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Obtain and record technical data in the field regarding construction sites, building, etc., through measurements, observations, sketches, and notes. Produce neat and accurate drawings from field notes, rough sketches, and/or oral instructions.
Make routine engineering computations and interpretations of data. Assist in making construction cost estimates and preparing bid specifications. Draft and trace plans, construction details, graphics, etc.
Maintain records, files, and reference materials. Answer inquiries in the office including project questions during bidding.
Assist with construction administration including preparing materials for meetings, troubleshooting contractor problems, inspecting construction work to insure compliance with codes and contracts, and following City contract processes (e.g., construction start up, partial payments, bidding, project closeout, etc).
Perform related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of architectural drafting techniques, materials, and practices. Knowledge of architectural terminology, building principles and practices, and mathematics including geometry and trigonometry. Working knowledge of the methods and techniques for inspecting public works construction projects. Ability to make neat and legible technical drawings. Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications for the construction of buildings. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal staff, persons in other agencies, contractors, and the public. Ability to climb ladders and access construction sites. Skill in free hand lettering and use of drafting equipment.
Training and Experience:
Two years of technical drafting and/or related experience in the field of architecture. Such experience would normally be gained after completion of high school or equivalent (including two years of math and/or mechanical drawing). Vocational school or college training in the field of architecture, architectural drawing, or a closely related field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the experience. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledges, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of positions in this class will also be considered.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
Ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position.
