ARCHITECTURAL AIDE II
CLASS DESCRIPTION
General Responsibilities:
This is skilled technical support work performed in a professional architectural and public works construction environment. The work involves preparing architectural plans, drawings, and construction specifications for new construction, additions, remodeling, and repair work to City-owned buildings; performing construction inspection work on various projects; and performing other related technical support activities. The work at this level differs from that at the Architectural Aide I level in terms of increased responsibility for entire projects; more involvement in the preparation of designs and solutions; and increased interaction with owners, agency occupants and contractors. The work is performed under the general supervision of a professional architect and is reviewed in progress and upon completion.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Obtain and record technical data in the field pertaining to construction sites, buildings, etc., through measurements, observations, sketches, and notes. Consult with owner/agency to define scope of project and design parameters. Produce neat and accurate drawings from field notes, rough sketches and/or oral instructions.
Conduct product research and synthesize and evaluate information on building products and materials to be specified for projects. Collect information and develop construction cost estimates for projects.
Prepare or assist in the preparation of designs and solutions based on information obtained from owner/agency. Develop architectural, plumbing, heating and electrical working drawings; including plans, elevations, sections and details.
Develop specifications including architectural, plumbing, heating, electrical and specialty work. Maintain the City's Master Specifications for construction of buildings. Revise, update, refine and rewrite Master Specifications accordingly.
Present projects to owner/agency and Board of Public Works for approval. Coordinate some projects from start to finish. Coordinate informational pre-bid and pre-construction meetings. Consult with contractors and troubleshoot contractor problems in connection with constructions projects and bids.
Inspect construction work to insure compliance with contract and codes: Prepare inspection reports. Perform procedures in accordance with City processes (e.g., construction start up, partial payments, bidding, project closeout, etc.).
Perform miscellaneous drafting, tracing, drawing and graphics. Maintain records, files and reference materials. Answer inquiries in the office, including project questions during bidding.
Perform related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of architectural drafting techniques, materials, and practices. Knowledge of architectural terminology, building principles and practices, and mathematics including geometry and trigonometry. Knowledge of the methods and techniques for inspecting public works construction projects. Ability to make neat and legible technical drawings. Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications for the construction of buildings. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal staff, persons in other agencies, contractors, and the public. Ability to climb ladders and access construction sites. Skill in free hand lettering and use of drafting equipment.
Training and Experience:
Three years of technical drafting and/or experience in the field of architecture. Such experience would normally be gained after completion of high school or equivalent (including two years of math and/or mechanical drawing). Vocational school or college training in the field of architecture, architectural drawing, or a closely related field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the experience up to two years. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledges, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of positions in this class will also be considered.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
Ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position.
