ASSISTANT TRANSIT SCHEDULER

CLASS DESCRIPTION

General Responsibilities:

This is a specialized developmental position responsible for assisting the Transit Scheduler in planning, coordinating, and monitoring the scheduling of motorcoach operators and the scheduling and routing of transit vehicles to maximize the use of equipment, capacity, and energy; minimize cost and safety problems; and be consistent with applicable labor agreements. Initially an employee in this position will be in training with more direct supervisory involvement. The degree of independence and the scope of responsibilities will increase to the full performance level as the work is learned. The work is reviewed by examination of results and recommendations and by periodic conferences.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction and review of the Transit Scheduler, design new or revised routes and schedules for safety, efficiency, and quality service. Prepare various route alternatives as assigned. Calculate the hours for schedules and calculate or determine the actual mileage for various alternatives. Prepare temporary changes to school routes.

Collect information relative to problems such as overcrowding or underutilization. Recommend solutions and/or develop alternatives which would solve the problem. Provide supervisors with information about changes and problems. Recommend changes in schedules, routes, or procedures to optimize service, efficiency, and safety.

Assist in the development of major route changes. Proof maps, schedules, and related materials for accuracy.

Ride with operators to time routes and drive routes to determine timing and practicality of a route.

Assist in cutting schedules into driver runs assuring that all applicable contract provisions are followed. Design, post, and monitor the general and weekly pick information and the vacation picks. Determine picks by seniority as designated by union contract.

Assist the Transit Scheduler by performing various aspects of the overall long-range schedule and route planning activities including drafting alternative routes and calculating time and mileage.

Assign equipment to routes where they can best be used to address ridership loads and existing transit policies. Notify operations and maintenance units of assignments and post the information with the general pick.

Perform related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

Basic knowledge of transportation scheduling methods and the ability to obtain and apply complete knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and practices of transportation scheduling. Ability to organize, manipulate, and coordinate large amounts of relatively complex data and related information within defined parameters. Ability to make mathematical computations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Ability to communicate in oral and written forms. Ability to learn how to utilize computerized methods for developing routes and schedules. Ability to interpret and apply labor contract provisions as they relate to schedule writing, run cutting, and pick procedures. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and to learn how to operate a motorcoach.

Training and Experience:

Two years of responsible experience relating to transit operations. Such experience may have been gained in a position involving route and schedule planning or as a motor coach operator, Transit Operations Supervisor, or in a similar type of operations-related position and normally would follow graduation from high school or the equivalent. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in possession of the knowledges, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work will also be considered.

Special Requirement:

Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
