AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE WORKER 1

CLASS DESCRIPTION

General Responsibilities:

This is routine manual and semi-skilled work in servicing and cleaning fleet equipment. This is entry level work in the automotive trades classifications and primarily involves in-garage maintenance and routine servicing of vehicles. The work is carried out under the supervision of a General Foreperson and the leadership of an Automotive Maintenance Worker 3. This work concentrates on vehicle inspection, service and maintenance contrasted to repair work.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

Lubricate, fuel, steam clean, wash, inspect and park fleet equipment. Install and remove tire chains and cables. Change tires and perform limited tire repair. Operate motor vehicles.

Perform minor testing, check levels and change fluids, check and adjust equipment and accessories and perform other preventive maintenance functions on automotive equipment. Schedule equipment/vehicles for service.

Clean work areas; run errands; and perform other routine tasks as assigned.

Perform preventive maintenance of shop equipment (e.g., hoists, lubrication of equipment and oil pumps, etc.).

Assist journey level mechanics in the repair and overhauling of light and heavy fleet equipment. Assist in the troubleshooting of equipment problems.

Perform the work of an Automotive Maintenance Worker 2 in a training capacity.

Perform related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of routine vehicle preventive maintenance procedures. Knowledge of washing and greasing vehicles, and changing and making repairs to tires and tubes. Knowledge of routine automotive testing procedures and unit parts replacements. Ability to service vehicles by checking levels and changing fluids (e.g., gas, oil, water, anti-freeze, etc.) and lubricating equipment. Ability to operate and maintain specialized servicing equipment such as grease guns, air hose, floor jacks, hydraulic hoists, battery charges, pumps, steamer, etc. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain adequate attendance.

Training and Experience:

Six (6) months experience in servicing and performing maintenance work on automotive or related equipment. Such experience would normally be gained after completion of high school or equivalent. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledges, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) without air brake restriction and with combination endorsements. Ability to lift 25 pounds repeatedly and 50-70 pounds frequently. Ability to engage in strenuous activity consistent with the trade (including bending, twisting, stooping, climbing ladders, etc.).
