AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE WORKER 3

 CLASS DESCRIPTION

General Responsibilities:

This is manual, semi-skilled and leadership work in servicing fleet and heavy construction equipment; and in the development and maintenance of associated maintenance programs, standards and services. Work involves training and leading subordinate worker, and monitoring and maintaining service standards. Work is performed under general supervision.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform all of the duties of the Automotive Maintenance Worker 2.

Lubricate and service heavy equipment (e.g., graders, front-end loaders, crawler-tractors, cranes, scrapers, farm tractors, heavy-duty trucks, etc.). Lubricate and change oil and filters in engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems and differentials. Check equipment cooling systems, leaks, anti-freeze levels, batteries, brakes, lights, etc. Operate and maintain specialized servicing equipment, such as grease guns, air hose, floor jacks, hydraulic hoists, battery chargers, pumps, steamers, etc. Clean, wash and steam-clean equipment. Operate motor vehicles.

Train subordinate automotive maintenance workers in all phases of their work. Provide related guidance, clarification, and leadership. Monitor activities for conformance with established standards.

Work with Parts Manager in the development and maintenance of related stock and preventative maintenance supplies.

Check new vehicles into service. Enter new vehicle information into computerized maintenance system, to include the type and levels of preventive maintenance to be performed. Review operator's maintenance manuals and determine preventive maintenance standards (e.g., fluids, filters, intervals, break-in, etc.). Work with vendors in identifying and supporting service needs.

Participate in the development and maintenance of related libraries, records, and files.

Assist management in removing vehicles from service and vehicle retirement.

Perform related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of principles and practices utilized in servicing and lubricating automotive and heavy equipment. Thorough knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures related to heavy-duty equipment, including graders, crawlers, front-end loaders, etc. Ability to independently service heavy-duty equipment. Ability to operate and maintain related maintenance equipment, including jacks, hoists, steam cleaning and lubricating equipment. Ability to develop maintenance standards and schedule equipment for servicing. Ability to train subordinates in all phases of their work and provide related leadership. Ability to provide directly related administrative support services. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to enter data into the computerized maintenance system, to include the type and levels of services performed. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to maintain effective working relationships. Ability to maintain adequate attendance.

Training and Experience:

Three (3) years of directly related experience performing maintenance and service work on automotive and heavy-duty equipment. Such experience would normally be gained after graduation from high school, trade school or equivalent plus one year of vocational or trade school training on the special servicing of heavy-duty equipment. Directly related experience servicing heavy-duty automotive equipment may be substituted for the vocational school training on a year-for-year basis. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledges, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without an air brake restriction. Ability to lift 25 pounds repeatedly, 50-70 pounds frequently and heavier objects occasionally. Ability to engage in strenuous activity consistent with the trade (including bending, twisting, stooping, climbing ladders, etc.).
