AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE WORKER

CLASS DESCRIPTION

General Responsibilities:

This is routine manual and semi-skilled work in servicing and cleaning fleet equipment. This is beginning level work in the automotive trades classifications and primarily involves in-garage maintenance and quick servicing of vehicles. The work is carried out under the direct supervision of the Shop Foreperson and the indirect supervision of an Automotive Maintenance Worker II, with assistance available from mechanics and Parts Room staff. These positions are distinguished from higher class of automotive mechanic primarily by the degree of mechanical skill exercised and the character of work assignments received. Incumbents of these jobs concentrate on vehicle inspection, service and maintenance contrasted to repair work.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform the general servicing of fleet equipment, including such tasks as lubricating, fueling, steam cleaning and washing, inspecting and parking fleet equipment; installing and removing tire chains and cables; and changing tires and performing limited tire repair.

Perform minor testing, checking levels and changing fluids, checking and adjusting equipment and accessories (not requiring previous mechanical training) and performing other preventive maintenance functions.

Perform general garage housekeeping such as sweeping, cleaning and run errands.

Perform preventive maintenance of shop equipment (e.g., hoists, lubrication of equipment and oil pumps, etc.).

Assist journey level mechanics in the repair and overhauling of light and heavy fleet equipment. Assist in the troubleshooting of equipment problems.

Perform related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures. Knowledge of washing and greasing vehicles, and changing and making repairs to tires and tubes. Knowledge of minor testing and unit parts replacements. Ability to service vehicles by checking levels and changing fluids (e.g., gas, oil, water, anti-freeze, etc.) and lubricating equipment. Ability to use jacks, wrenches, grease guns, cleaning materials. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Training and Experience:

Six (6) months experience in servicing and performing maintenance work on automotive or related equipment. Such experience would normally be gained after completion of high school or equivalent. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledges, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Possession of a valid commercial driver's license without air brake restriction and with combination endorsements. Ability to lift 25 pounds repeatedly and 50-70 pounds frequently. Ability to work with arms overhead for extended periods; to bend, twist, stoop, climb ladders and perform other manual laboring tasks.
