SALES CLERK
CLASS DESCRIPTION
General Responsibilities:
This is retail sales and customer service work. Employees present product information and respond to customer inquiries in a retail sales environment. Work involves participation in related merchandising, inventory control, and associated clerical work. Work involves initiative in the performance of assigned duties.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct sales of merchandise to the general public, clients and visitors involving retail financial transactions (cash, checks and/or credit cards). Stock merchandise on shelves, check in new inventory, and build effective merchandise displays.
Dust and clean merchandise, fixtures and shelves, and maintain display lighting, etc. Conduct periodic inventory in accordance with standard procedures.
Assist in researching, selecting, ordering and marketing merchandise. Assist with developing promotional materials. Provide incidental leadership to volunteers and other as may be required. Assist in maintaining and reconciling inventory, cash and sales receipts, determining effective pricing strategies, preparing daily deposits, financial statements and other routine reports as required.
Perform related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of retail sales, merchandising techniques and practices relating to such items as gifts or souvenirs. Working knowledge of related office procedures and computerized equipment. Ability to operate a cash register, credit card machine, telephone, fax and computer workstation with software applicable to the operation of retail sales. Ability to perform retail sales activities, including the ability to make transactions involving money accurately and quickly and perform simple arithmetic calculations. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Knowledge of customer service practices and principles. Ability to work independently and to organize work effectively and efficiently. Ability to reach, bend, and sit and/or stand and walk continuously for long periods of time. Ability to lift and move merchandise and use a short step ladder. Ability to maintain adequate attendance.
Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and six months of retail experience involving cash handling. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.
