ARBORIST ASSISTANT (HOURLY)

CLASS DESCRIPTION

General Responsibilities:

This is specialized laboring work in the Forestry Section of the City Parks Division. The work involves cutting, piling and loading brush and limbs; grubbing out tree stumps; assisting in handling ropes to lower large limbs; assisting in planting trees and shrubs; and digging and backfilling holes. Employees in this class will be expected to learn and perform routine tree climbing and trimming activities and to use caution to avoid personal injury and injury to other persons or property. Assignments are provided by the immediate supervisor and the work is performed under close supervision.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

Cut, pile and load brush and limbs. Operate brushchipper. Provide assistance to Arborists. Assist in handling ropes for lowering large limbs and with positioning ropes on logs and trunks to be removed or loaded.

Assist in planting trees and shrubs, digging and backfilling holes and performing related laboring activities. Prune small trees.

Climb trees using ladders and safety belts. Remove branches using power or hand saws. Assist Arborist in tree trimming activities.

Perform related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time and to withstand exposure to variable and severe weather conditions. Ability to learn and perform routine tree climbing and trimming activities. Ability to climb trees and work at varying heights. Ability to operate a large truck.

Training and Experience:

Six months experience performing related laboring work. Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledges, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position will also be considered.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver's license. Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License within six weeks after starting employment.
