The South area is a well-established residential one bisected by dynamic commercial areas bordering Park Street and the Beltline, and includes much of the area between Seminole Highway and the Yahara River. This larger area includes some smaller areas undergoing transition, and some areas that have typically generated a high number of police calls.
The CD program has traditionally targeted a broad range of its site-specific activities to this area, including housing, business development and support for civic focal points, like centers and gardens. Some of the major activities have included the construction of the Boys and Girls Club, the extensive rehab and homeownership programs in Bramís Addition, the efforts to promote business development through support of Madison Development Corporation, a South Madison Community Development Corporation, the original renovation and annexation of the Villager Mall, and Genesis Development Corporation, and two specific neighborhood planning processes. In 2002, the City helped Genesis purchase a building at 313 West Beltline Highway to serve as a small business incubator and employment center for South Madison, and in 2004, the City provided an additional $92,000 for renovation of leasehold improvements for small business tenants. In 2005, the City worked with the Dane Fund to help leverage a new infusion of New Market Tax Credits to help lower and stabilize the Genesis incubator operations.
The major 2007 activities in this area will reflect this broad interest and commitment. The program will help complete a concentration neighborhood planning process in the greater South Madison and Bay Creek area, with a commitment to support the higher priority projects in the two years following the adoption of the plan. The Office will help staff intensive implementation planning groups associated with the redevelopment of the Park Street-Ann Street-Badger Road area and the Todd Drive area. The program will also continue its support of core operations at the Boys and Girls Club.
The South area is also served by our community-wide core/basic activities, which are available to residents in all areas of the City of Madison.
