Celebrate Earth Day with your neighbors and friends by cleaning up your local park and neighborhood. Join this communitywide effort in April to make a difference.

  • VOLUNTEER for the 2014 Earth Day Challenge-April 19, 2014

Earth Day is a great opportunity to get out and help support our Parks.  Earth Day Challenge Projects are held all over Madison in many of our 260 parks. Volunteers may assist with trash pickup, weeding, or other beautification projects.

Earth Day Challenge 2014 Projects:

We are seeking volunteers for the following Earth Day projects.  Please fill out the registration form above and indicate what project interests you.  If you would like to volunteer at a different location, please indicate that on the registration form and we will try our best to accommodate your requests.  Volunteer spots are filled first come, first served basis.  More projects may be added.

Warner Park (East): 2390 North Sherman Avenue

Volunteers will assist with picking up trash, pulling weeds, pruning back shrubs. Your participation helps keep Warner’s mission to enrich the Madison community alive!

Volunteers needed: 20 - FULL

Olbrich Park (East): 3527 Atwood Avenue

Volunteers will assist with picking up trash, removing invasive species and pruning shrubs. Volunteer at one of Madison’s largest lakefront parks for your Earth Day Challenge.

Volunteers needed: 20 - FULL

Elver Park (West): 1250 McKenna Boulevard

Volunteers will assist with picking up trash, rake playground surfaces and remove invasive weeds. Help beautify the expansive Elver Park!

Volunteers needed: 5

Olin Park (Central): 1156 Olin-Turville Court

Volunteers will rid the grounds and shoreline of litter and general park beautification. This is a beautiful park, known for its historic pavilion and Capitol Views.

Volunteers needed: 30 - FULL

Garner Park (West): 333 South Rosa Road

Volunteers will assist with picking up trash, cleaning the playground area and removing invasive weeds to prepare for spring.

Volunteers needed: 20 - FULL

Cherokee Marsh (North): 6098 North Sherman Avenue

Volunteers will assist with planting native shrubs in Dane County’s largest wetland area. Cherokee Marsh. Grab your gardening gloves and be ready to get dirty.

Volunteers needed: 20

Edna Taylor Conservation Park (East): 802 Femrite Drive

Volunteers will come together to clean up trash along and near the trails in the park and pull invasive species throughout the space, like Garlic Mustard. Those with experience pulling Garlic Mustard are encouraged to volunteer!

Volunteers needed: 2-5

Demetral Park (East): 601 North Sixth Street

Volunteers will assist with trash pickup, mulching underneath trees and pulling garlic mustard to help beautify Demetral Park for spring.

Volunteers needed: 6

Olbrich Park Shoreline (East): 3527 Atwood Avenue

Assist volunteers in picking up trash and ridding the shoreline of debris. This project takes place on APRIL 12 from 9:30am to 11:00am, not April 19. This is a great project for those who may be out of town the weekend of the Earth Day Challenge.

Volunteers needed: 20

Belmar Hills Park (West/South): 4619 Jenewein Road

Assist members of the ADMNA and Brotherhood Groups in cleaning up Allied Drive, Briddle Parkway, the Beltline fence and Belmar Hills Park to ready the area for spring!

Volunteers needed: 20

Nakoma Park (West): 3804 Nakoma Road

Located near Lake Wingra and the Arboretum, this park gets a lot of spring –time traffic. Clear out dead plants and trash from Nakoma Park to help “SustaiNakoma!”

Volunteers needed: FULL

Vilas Park (Central): 1602 Vilas Park Drive

Clean up the little “Dinosaur Park” near Vilas Park by picking up trash and brush, pulling weeds and picking up garbage along Drake Street. Even take the “tree walk” with the group and learn about trees before Earth Day! All are welcome to volunteer!

Penn Park (South): 2101 Fisher Street

Join members of the Penn Park community in picking up trash, spreading mulch, and pulling weeds and garlic mustard! This event is on April 26, not April 19, so it’s great for those that may be out of town the weekend of the original Earth Day Challenge.

Volunteers needed: 12

Westmorland Park (West): 4114 Tokay Boulevard

Engage in spring clean up by raking grass and leaves, cutting down dried perennials, weeding flower beds, distributing mulch and hauling brush! There’s a lot to do to clean up this location!

Volunteers needed: 15

Yahara Place Park (East): 2025 Yahara Place

Help clean up vegetative overgrowth and debris from the park, especially along the shore! This is a great location to help out, and you will be treated to lunch for all your hard work at the end of the project!

  • HOST an Earth Day Challenge Volunteer Project

We are currently encouraging groups and neighborhood leaders to host an Earth Day Challenge Project in their local park.  Projects should be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014.  The volunteer project organizer can determine the starting and ending time, as well as the scope of the project.  Past projects have included garbage cleanup, weeding, mulching, and maintaining flower beds.  If you need ideas, please feel free to contact the Parks Office.  The Parks Division may be able to provide some supplies for your group including trash bags.
