Volunteer of the Year - Friends of Hoyt Park
Among the accomplishments of this group are natural area restoration of its prairies and oak savannahs, restoration of historical brick fireplaces and entrance ways and money raised to hire its own park ranger. The Friends of Hoyt Park serve as a ‘gold standard’ of a Madison Parks ‘Friends” group.
Volunteer Project of the Year - Joe Bonardi of Period Gardens
Before Joe started caring for this small downtown Madison Park garden, it was overgrown, disheveled, and served as a place for unwanted behavior such as public intoxication. Joe moved into the downtown neighborhood, saw the potential of this garden and got down to work! In a couple year’s time, he transformed the garden into a beautiful downtown oasis where people enjoy the flowers and landscaping as well as even a few summer weddings.
