Shelter Details
Available year-round, you may check availability and reserve online or by calling 608-266-4711.History: Built in 1863, Gates of Heaven is the fourth oldest surviving synagogue building in the nation. The building was moved to James Madison Park in 1971. It is a popular location for intimate wedding ceremonies and the small upstairs seating area provides a wonderful birds-eye view for guests. The Victorian-era Period Gardens located a block away on the corner of Pinckney Street and Gorham Street, is a beautiful location for photos.
Restrooms: While this historic building has two restrooms, they are located in the basement and are not ADA-accessible. The City of Madison will provide, at no additional cost, a portable accessible restroom when requested at least 10 days in advance of the reserved event. The building and restrooms are open only with a reservation.
Parking & Electricity: There are lighting and electrical outlets throughout the building. There is also central air and heat. Parking is limited to 24 spaces.
Alcohol and Food:
Food or beverages other than water are prohibited. Alcohol is prohibited, except in the context of a religious ceremony.
Prohibited: To maintain the beauty of the building, no nails, staples, or other fasteners that will harm the walls or floors may be used in this or any park shelter. The Madison Parks Division recommends using free-standing decorations.
