Research for a Veterans' Memorial location began with the Parks Division in 2004 after local vets realized Madison lacked a local veteran's memorial in a city park. At the time, a subdivision called Liberty Place on Madison's southwest side was being developed. It was a natural location for the Veterans Memorial Park.
The memorial includes a pergola, seating, a plaza and the flag corp. Solar lights and blue reflective glass is installed in place of running fountain water, which cuts down on maintenance costs and overall environmental impact. A brick walkway is also included. Friends and family of veterans may purchase a personalized brick from the VFW Post 7591.
This 9 ½ parcel of park land will also contain bike and walking trails, playground equipment and tennis and basketball courts, making the park a peaceful and memorable destination for local Madison residents.
New playground surfacing will be installed at Veterans Memorial Park! The existing playground surfacing will be replaced with new rubber mulch that meets the safety standards set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The extents of this new surfacing may differ from the existing surfacing to accommodate the playground equipment fall safety zones.
As part of the playground resurfacing, new plastic border timbers will be installed to keep the new playground mulch in place and maintain the necessary depth to meet the CPSC fall zone requirements.
It is anticipated that construction will begin in late summer/fall 2015. During construction the playground will be closed.
