There is a current trend involving Commercial Burglaries, mostly to restaurant /bar type businesses but not exclusively. The common thread is that the suspects cut what they believe to be the alarm system wires and phone lines. This does cause significant damage, in addition to any losses from the items stolen. There have been a several along N Sherman Ave. Other locations along East Washington Ave. and N. Stoughton Rd areas have also been hit.

We are assuring that our Patrol personnel are aware of this trend, and are providing extra preventative Patrols as their time between police calls for service allows. In addition, our Detectives will be working with the Countywide Burglary Task Force created by Madison PD, to coordinate our response to this trend, which extends well beyond our District and City boarders. Lastly, our Community Policing Team will be working with detectives and crime analysts to help identify and apprehend those involved as well.

Additional steps business owners can take including assuring adequate outside lightings, particularly to rear. Adequate lighting on the interior, when cameras are in use, dramatically improves the quality of the video evidence available for our detectives should a burglary occur. Having cameras in these areas is extremely helpful for follow up investigation as well. We also recommend periodic security patrols as another "best practice" to help protect your property during the over-night hours.

Our best likelihood of catching these suspects however is if business owners and neighbors are aware of this problem, and notify police immediately if they see suspicious activity.
