Salvation Army Redevelopment Proposal

The Tenney Lapham Neighborhood Association steering committee is holding its first meeting for this proposal on Monday, July 1, 6:00-7:30pm at American Family Insurance's Dream Bank at 821 E. Washington Ave. Meeting notes, developer presentations, and related materials are housed here. City agencies, the mayor's office, MPD, and I are very much aware that the Salvation Army's shelter has both positive and negative impacts on our city. I believe that the city will carefully consider everyone's input throughout consideration of the proposal. At the TLNA steering committee meetings neighbors will have the opportunity to (1) work with all stakeholders to see if the proposal can get to the point where it is a win-win for the neighborhood, the city, the SA, and its clients, (2) shape the committee's input to TLNA Council who may eventually vote on some level of support for the proposal.  

Former District 2 Alder Zellers To Be Appointed to Plan Commission

Mayor Rhodes-Conway has nominated former District 2 Alder Ledell Zellers to serve on the city's Plan Commission. Ledell served on Plan Commission for her entire 6-year alder term and will bring a wealth of knowledge as a resident member. I look forward to her joining me on Plan Commission. Her appointment is likely to be up for confirmation at the July 16 Common Council meeting.

Electric Scooters Policy Considerations

E-scooters will be a topic on the agendas of the Transportation Policy and Planning Board on Monday and on Tuesday at the Common Council Executive Committee meeting. Currently, Madison city ordinances ban the use of e-scooters without the city first conducting a pilot program to study their impacts, but state government recently passed a new law that will allow e-scooters. Fortunately, in the new law local governments are empowered to regulate their usage, so this week's agenda items will begin Madison's discussion of potential policies to regulate e-scooters, if they are allowed.

School Resource Officers and City Attorney Contract

The contract to provide School Resource Officers for the four MMSD high schools for a 3-year term, beginning August 1, 2019 will be up for approval at Tuesday's Common Council meeting. This complex issue has vocal people in support and in opposition. Thank you all for your thoughtful comments. The renewal of City Attorney Mike May's contract is also on the agenda Tuesday.

2019 funding is still available for the Toilet Rebate Program

One of the state's first water conservation incentive programs has hit a major milestone. Madison Water Utility started its Toilet Rebate Program in 2009, offering people $100 rebates to replace old, water-wasting toilets with high-efficiency WaterSense models. Ten years later, the program has saved an estimated 1 billion gallons of water. More information on this program, including how to apply, can be found here

MadiSUN Backyard Solar Grant application now open 

The application for the new MadiSUN Backyard Solar Grant program is open until mid-August 2019. MadiSUN is the City of Madison's initiative to expand solar energy for homes and businesses. The City is working to build access to clean energy for all members of the community. The Backyard Solar Grant program is one of three solar programs MadiSUN offers. In addition to the Backyard Solar Grant program, MadiSUN offers Group Buy for Homes and Solar for Business. More info at the MadiSUN website.
