Dane County Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Mosquitoes found in Dane County have tested positive for West Nile virus. Public Health Madison & Dane County (PHMDC) monitors mosquito traps across the county during summer months. This is the first positive test for West Nile virus in Dane County mosquitoes this year. PHMDC info on the virus and prevention techniques are here.

West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes get the virus by feeding on infected birds, and are then able to pass it on to other birds and mammals when they bite. The best ways to avoid West Nile virus are preventing mosquito bites and getting rid of places mosquitoes breed.

To monitor for West Nile Virus in the community, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health asks that residents report sick or dead crows, blue jays, or ravens, to the Dead Bird Reporting Hotline at 1-800-433-1610. More information from the State DHS is located here.

Dane Dances Celebrates 20th Year!

Dane Dances! is a family friendly event on the stunning Monona Terrace rooftop EVERY FRIDAY EVENING IN AUGUST. The much-anticipated summer music series is a great way to get down and dance with your friends, coworkers, or family. The rooftop gets shaking as the sun sets against the iconic Wisconsin State Capitol with the breeze of the Lake Monona at your back while you dance. Feel free to bring a blanket, chair and picnic basket; seating on the rooftop is limited. Sorry, carry in alcohol is prohibited. Dane Dances! promotes inclusivity with a fun night of music and dancing to DJs and bands for all ages.

Salvation Army Redevelopment Proposal Update

Many neighbors continue to express interest in the Salvation Army's redevelopment proposal for the 600 block of E. Washington and E. Mifflin. The Urban Design Commission had its first look at the proposal on July 17 in an informational-only presentation. A subset of that presentation is available on the Tenney Lapham Neighborhood Association's development website. UDC and other city bodies will formally consider the proposal in the future, but no meeting schedules have been set. The TLNA steering committee will continue meeting to evaluate and provide input on the proposal, but as of publication of this update, no date has been announced for their next meeting. Emerald Ash Borer Preemptive Tree Removal in Downtown Area

Forestry crews will start removing ash trees in downtown areas starting in the next week or two. The area targeted for this effort is highlighted in yellow on the Forestry District Map below. There are approximately 114 ash street trees that are scheduled to be removed within this area. The removals will take place over the next few months. The tree replacement timeframe will be either Spring or Fall of 2020. Planting will take place after the stumps are ground out by the Streets Division.

August 8 Community Meeting on Rat Infestation

District 12 Alder Syed Abbas has received many emails about problems with the rising population of rats in neighborhoods near District 2, across the Yahara River and points east and north. He has organized a meeting at which Public Health Madison and Dane County and the Parks Department will present information on this issue and answer questions. Repeat: August Moving Days 2019

On August 14th and 15th leases for most downtown area apartments end. That means that thousands of residents will be moving out of their old apartments and into new ones. In 2018, Madison's student moving days put over 1 million pounds of material into the landfill. That's so much stuff. We can do better than that! Before you landfill it, donate it, or sell it, or best yet, move it with you.

See this website for resources to help reduce the amount of your stuff going to the landfill during these moving days. It is crucial to follow the rules and regulations so Streets Division crews can collect all that waste material as quickly and safely as possible.

The Sina Davis Movies in the Park Program continues with more great movies and locations!

Over the past several years, the City of Madison Parks Division developed Movies in the Park in harmony with the City's Neighborhood Resource Teams (NRTs). Sina Davis, from the Allied Drive Neighborhood, provided the spark and served as the main community driver behind the creation and development of the program. 4th Annual Black Restaurant Week: August 11-18

The fourth annual Black Restaurant Week will take place Aug. 11-18, 2019. Each participating food vendor will have a special during the week. The theme this year is "Harnessing the Power of Black Excellence." The Madison Black Chamber of Commerce promotes Black Restaurant Week as one way of actively supporting Black businesses. More info here.

Repeat Call for Input: Task Force on Government Structure

The Task Force on the Structure of City Government has prepared a resident survey to assist in its public engagement effort. Please visit the Task Force website, watch the video, and take the survey, which is in a link right below the video. 

Do you know when the City is making key decisions that will impact your neighborhood? Or who is making those decisions? Do you have the time, resources, or know how to voice your opinion to City Government? The Task Force on Government Structure is asking these questions and others to find out if changes to city government structure could help make the City work more effectively for all of its residents, and, particularly, for residents of color and low income.

The Task Force wants your help to find out if this current city government structure works for all Madison residents --- or if changes could help make city government work better.
