Driver Hears "Boom" Just Before Flames Appear While Driving on Interstate

The Madison Fire Department was called to a vehicle fire on westbound I90-I94 Thursday. Upon arrival, Engine 8 found a fire in the engine compartment of the vehicle, a Kia Optima, and the sole occupant was safely out of the vehicle.

The fire was beginning to extend into the passenger compartment just as firefighters arrived. They quickly put out the fire and checked for extension.

The driver reports he heard a “boom” and then the engine compartment started on fire. Although the exact cause of the fire is unknown, the driver says the car does burn oil and he had recently topped off the engine oil.
