Urban Design Commission

UDC meets tomorrow, Wed Dec 2, at 4:30 pm, and has four D13 items on the agenda.

The first is an informational presentation by Parks on Vilas Park Master Plan updates.

The second item of note has SSM going for final approval for their signage package. I've inquired about this item out of concerns about the illuminated signage. I am told there will be no illuminated signage atop the building facing residents on Fish Hatchery. SSM is aware of my concerns about the viewshed from Lake Wingra and Wingra Park and it appears they have taken this into account.

The third item is a minor sign exception for Lauer Realty's new space at 2526 Monroe St.

The fourth item is for the Truman Olson project at 1402 S. Park up for final approval. Given this is for final approval, I've asked staff about the notification process. Apparently, projects are only noticed with the first public hearing and are not re-noticed if/when they come back for final approval.  Clarifying the Initial/Final approval process is one of the multiple ordinance procedural updates UDC has planned for 2021. Please review the proposed design changes and let me know if you have concerns by emailing me at district13@cityofmadison.com or calling 608.424.2580.  Information about how to participate or watch the meeting is listed below.

Lastly

Please continue your COVID vigilance. In the midst of good news about vaccines, we must not let up on the basics of wearing masks, hand hygiene, and social distancing.

If you traveled during Thanksgiving, there is mixed messaging about whether you should quarantiine upon return or just get tested. All experts seem to agree that you should for sure get tested and that reducing social contact for a period of time is well advised.

Special shout out to Vilas resident Lee L. for sharing this recent CNN story that addresses how to mitigate spead this holiday season.

Take care and stay safe.
