South Madison Plan, Edgewood HS Commons, Independent Police Monitor

posted

Hi Everyone.

Here are the meeting and event highlights for this week.

Plan Commission Tonight

The Plan Commission will be discussing the South Madison Plan at its meeting this evening:

Regarding the Plan...I have concerns about the recommendations for the Thorstad Concept Area that in my mind do not comport with the direction the City is going with Transit-Oriented Development. I understand the need for home ownership as a means of community wealth-building, but am not of the opinion a neighborhood of single-family homes close to the future BRT line on South Park represents good planning. Staff have prepared an alternate plan for this concept in response to concerns that have been raised at various committees in the review process. The alternative allows for an increase in density, but sill embraces the single-family home concept. I look forward to a robust discussion before Plan Commission.

Also on the Plan Commission agenda, Edgewood High School has applied for a conditional use permit to build a new Commons. EHS representatives met with DMNA last week to discuss their proposal. I raised questions about sustainable design and the lighting plan, and believe there is room for improvement along these lines. However, there are limits to what can be required due to the State building code, which preempts the City's ability to impose stricter standards. Still, these are questions worth raising.
