Highlights for the Week of December 5, 2022

Transportation Policy and Planning Board meets on Monday, December 5 at 5:00 PM. Items on the agenda include establishing a Transportation Demand Management Program and amending Sections within Chapter 28 of the Madison General Ordinances to implement the new Transit Orientated Development ("TOD") Overlay District.

• Passenger Rail Station Study Kick-off Meeting - The City of Madison is hosting a kick-off meeting for the Passenger Rail Station Study on Dec. 7, 2022. The meeting offers in-person and virtual alternatives for attending.

• New Municipal Services Payment portal opens December 8, 2022 at 7:30am

• Mayor and Alders Propose to Allow More Development Near High Capacity Transit. I have added my name as a sponsor of this exciting legislation. 

  • More: Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is a pedestrian-oriented, compact, mixed-use development style focused along high quality public transit. It typically includes a mix of housing, office, retail, neighborhood amenities and other uses within walking distance of a transit station. Proposed TOD legislation was introduced last Nov. 22 and it will be reviewed by the Transportation Policy and Planning Board on Dec. 5 and by the Plan Commission on Dec. 12. It is scheduled to return to the Common Council for a final decision on Jan. 3

• Along with other area Alders and the Mayor, I introduced a resolution on November 22nd directing the Planning Division to begin work on the West Area Plan, in partnership with other City departments and divisions.  The resolution was referred to the Plan Commission’s December 12th meeting and is expected to be back at Council for a vote on January 3, 2023.  The West Area Plan will be developed to guide land use, housing, urban design, parks and open space, and transportation within the Plan area, among other things.  The planning boundary is: Shorewood Hills/Lake Mendota/Middleton on the north, the Beltline on the west and south, and Midvale Boulevard on the east.  A project website, including a signup list for email updates, has been created.  Look for further updates, including a schedule for the initial round of public engagement, starting early next year.
