Metro Proposes Changes along E. Johnson and E. Gorham

On Wednesday, March 11, Metro Transit and the City of Madison Transportation Commission will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. to discuss potential service updates proposed to go into effect in August. In District 2, the biggest impacts of the proposed changes would be a reduction in the evening and late night service area on the current Route 81. The proposal includes ending service at N. Franklin St. rather than N. Ingersoll St. The proposal would also close some stops along Johnson/Gorham and open others.

Shamrock Shuffle to Close Downtown Streets on March 14

The annual Shamrock Shuffle to benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of Dane County takes place the morning of Saturday, March 14. Impacts in District 2 should be limited to early that morning since the 5K and 10K routes start at 8:15am and 8:00am, respectively. Both routes start at Library Mall and follow State, Gilman, Carroll, and Langdon Streets before heading west. More details here.

Requesting an Absentee Ballot for the Presidential Primary

 

With the Presidential Primary only five weeks away, the City of Madison Clerk's Office encourages voters who will need to vote absentee by mail to submit their absentee requests soon. Before requesting an absentee ballot, the Clerk's Office suggests that voters verify their registration here where voters with a Wisconsin driver license or Wisconsin ID card may also update their registration. Voter registration is also available at the front desk of every City of Madison agency, including all Madison Public Library locations. More details here.

 

Night Sweeping Begins Sunday, March 8

The Streets Division will begin the annual nighttime spring cleanup street sweeping process on the evening of March 8, 2020, if the weather allows.

 

Every year as winter changes to spring, the Streets Division deploys street sweepers for extended hours to collect sand and other grit that has accumulated on the roads during the winter months. Starting on the evening of March 8, 2020, sweepers will be active on city streets for 16 hours a day in order to collect as much of the debris from the roads as possible prior to the start of the spring rains.

The streets sweepers can only collect what they have access to along the curb. Therefore, please follow all posted parking restrictions. And all residents are encouraged to choose off-street parking options at night if possible. Residents are also encouraged not to place their refuse and recycling carts in street gutter for collection.

 

 

Steering Committee Meeting for Proposed Redevelopment on 400 Block E. Washington

 

The James Madison Park District steering committee that is reviewing the LZ Ventures redevelopment proposal for the north side of 400 block of E. Washington Ave is still working to finalize a next meeting date and location. Capitol Neighborhoods, Inc., President Eli Judge is organizing the committee, so if you'd like to participate and/or stay informed contact Eli at president@capitolneighborhoods.org.

2020 Census: Most UW-Madison Students Will Be Counted in Madison

The Census is a count of everyone living in the U.S. This includes international students.

When responding to the 2020 Census, UW–Madison students should be counted where they live and sleep most of the time as of April 1, 2020. For most students, that means in Madison, not back home with their parents. Parents or guardians should only include children who live with them full time during the school year.

UW-Madison students studying or living abroad on April 1 are not included in the Census. Students living in off-campus housing will receive their Census form in mid-March. Students in campus residence halls will receive their form in early April. More details here.

Voter ID Requirements for the Presidential Primary

With the Presidential Primary only six weeks away on Tuesday, April 7, the City of Madison Clerk's Office asks voters to help make sure their friends and family are prepared to vote with an acceptable voter ID. Wisconsin law specifies the forms of identification that can be used for voting purposes - details here.

Dogs On-Leash Policies in City Parks Approved

 

This past week Common Council approved a new ordinance and policies that will allow on-leash dogs in most city parks. Under the new policies, dogs will not be allowed on or near playgrounds, athletic fields when activities are occurring, Breese Stevens Field, conservation parks, and in several other locations/circumstances. Dogs will also not be allowed at the beaches in Tenney and James Madison Parks. The policies will not be in effect in a particular park until its signage is updated. Note that the Parks Division will be undertaking a public education and enforcement campaign to raise awareness of the new policies.

 

The only designated dog-free park in District 2 will be Period Garden Park, but per the new ordinance and policies, the list of dog-free parks can be altered in the future with consent of the Parks Superintendent and the Parks Commissioners; future changes do not have to be approved by Common Council. The closest dog-free parks to District 2 are B.B. Clark and Morrison Parks on Lake Monona. The city's eight off-leash dog parks will remain.

 

City Asks for Public Feedback on New Stormwater Guidelines

Over the past 3 years, Madison and surrounding areas have experienced a large number of extreme storm events. When the stormwater system is overloaded with too much storm or rainwater, either in heavy rainstorms or multiple heavy rainstorms in a short amount of time, flooding happens.

Madison ordinances include requirements for water quality, water quantity and erosion control design standards for anyone who wants to build in the City of Madison. City engineers reviewed the current ordinance and standards. Based on the recent heavier rainfall the area is experiencing, City engineers updated the standards to support expected larger and more intense rain storms.

 

The proposed changes have been posted and are ready for review and feedback. A series of public meetings are scheduled to take feedback on the proposed changes. Meeting details and contact info here. Madison Arts Commission Annual Arts Grants Opportunity 2020-2021

The City of Madison distributes funds to Madison artists and non-profit organizations through the Madison Arts Commission's annual grant programs.
